Expert Training Techniques for Personal Trainers

The Challenge

Do your clients struggle to deliver a powerful right cross?  As a dedicated personal trainer, you aim to empower your clients and boost their confidence in boxing for fitness. However, many clients find it difficult to generate the necessary power for effective punches, leading to frustration and potentially hindering their fitness progress and enjoyment of the sport.

 The Solution

Picture your clients feeling confidence, knowing their punches pack serious power. Drawing from my experience coaching Australian Amateur Boxing Champions, I've used this punching training drill on the heavy bag, a proven drill to help clients develop more punching power their right cross.

 The Strategy

In boxing, a powerful punch isn't solely about raw strength—it's a blend of speed, biomechanics, power, and kinetic energy. To help your clients master this technique, focus exclusively on the heavy bag. This is where they can truly develop their strength and power. Don’t practicing power punches on boxing pads, as they lack the necessary resistance to enhance technique effectively & can cause injury.

Mastering the Power Punch: A Step-by-Step Guide

Start with a proper boxing stance:

  • feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, weight evenly distributed.
  • Rear Foot Pivot: Teach clients to pivot on the ball of their rear foot, generating power from the ground up.
  •  Hip Rotation: Guide clients to rotate their hips in the punch direction, engaging core muscles for smooth power transfer from lower to upper body.
  • Torso Twist: Instruct clients to twist their torso as the punch progresses, amplifying the rotational force generated by the hips.
  •  Shoulder Extension: Remind clients to extend their rear shoulder forward, ensuring the full force of their body transfers into the punch.
  • Time to Act The best time to elevate your clients' boxing technique is now! Encourage them to commit to mastering these steps and watch as their punches transform into powerful, precise strikes.
  • Remember, Powerful punches should be applied to the heavy bag only, not the boxing pads.
